The equivalent of nearly 5 million dots per inch received PIA's first-ever
"They Said It Couldn't Be Done" award.
The poster was one of three finalists. The competition received over 5,600
entries from the U.S. and 15 other countries of which only 100 were chosen for
this category.
After the announcement, President Don Faust, his mother, RoseMary, who is
chairman of the board, and his brother Tom, who is vice president of sales,
were anxious to return to California to celebrate with business and family
members, Brian and Greg and the rest of the staff.
"Now they know that all their effort, experimentation, and long hours were
worth it," says Don. "This was an achievement we hoped would impress
our peers. And we were glad that PIA had judges who were technical experts and
understood what we, our pre-press and pressroom staff had accomplished."
The judges remarks were, "Faust has recreated the wheel. This piece has
exceeded the limitations of the traditional printing process by a factor of
ten. Is this the future of printing? Absolutely amazing!"
Faust spent many hours developing a program to make their extremely high
resolution technology capable of imaging direct to plate. After successfully
imaging the plates the next test was, could they print it.
Faust bought a new printing press specifically for its automation and
ability to print high-resolution images. The original criteria Faust established
in its print test was the ability to reproduce 600- and 900-line-screen
forms, the 1,110.80 line screen was to put this six-color press through
