FIRST AND FOREMOST: Consult your Customer Service Representative or Prepress Manager before any print project. This can save you TIME and MONEY in the long run by giving you any and all information possible related to the print project.

SCANS

  1. Scan all images at resolution by following this formula: (do not "up" the resolution of a lower res image, it will not work. It must be scanned at the proper resolution). 2 x line screen=scan resolution. 175 Line Screen=355 dpi 150 Line Screen=300 dpi 133 Line Screen=266 dpi.
  2. Include all placed graphics separately on the disk along with all the fonts used in the document.
  3. All scans must be in proper color model (CMYK, Duotone, Grayscale) before placing in your page layout program, as opposed to the RGB color model.
  4. Scan to final size whenever possible in order to keep file sizes down.
  5. When using 4/color or grayscale Tiffs or Scitex CT's in Quark Xpress the background must be set to any color other than "none".
  6. Avoid sizing images more than 120% in your page layout program, resolution goes down when images are blown up.
  7. Must use exact Pantone or Process color name for duotones.
  8. Bitmaps should have a resolution of no less than 600 dpi at full size.
  9. Be aware when dragging or copying images off of the web that their resolution will be very low and the quality will be unpredictable, in most cases not suitable for printing.

VECTOR ARTWORK

  1. Avoid nesting EPS's into one another, ie (a photoshop eps placed into an illustrator eps).
  2. Traps should be done in your illustration program, unless we are to trap your files. When we trap your files, we request that you not perform any trapping.
  3. Place or import graphics into Page layout program. 4. Remove all unused graphics from your "pasteboard" area.

PAGE LAYOUT

  1. Remove all unused graphics from your pasteboard area.
  2. Set up running headers, footers and folios on master pages. Align elements to master guidelines where practical. Check that elements abut properly.
  3. Use formats/style sheets as much as possible.
  4. Run spell checker.
  5. Create tab position pages with descriptions for front/back and place in file with other text pages.
  6. Keep number of files to a minimum. Do not make separate files that have just a few pages, except for covers.
  7. When spot colors are used, insure that the color used has the exact same name in all programs used.(Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand and any other related programs where eps's or tiff are created) ie (defining them as PANTONE 186 CV in one program and then as PANTONE 186 CVC in another is incorrect).
  8. When spot colors are created for CMYK separations, define them as such in the file's dialog boxes.
  9. Allow for 1/8" on all bleeds.
  10. Consult CSR for proper sizes, request a "dummy" cut to size and build your layout to that size. If you have bleed let if "hang over" the edge of your document by at least 1/8".

FONTS

  1. Make sure that all fonts/weights have a corresponding printer font. Do not force fonts to be bold or italic. They print correctly on a laser printer, but will give unpredictable results when printing to a RIP.
  2. Supply all screen/printer fonts used in a job. (Screen font numbers vary between machines).
  3. Provide a list of all fonts used in a document. Many page layout programs have an automated way to do this.
  4. Keep the number of different fonts used in your document to a minimum.

GENERAL IMAGING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Supply laser proofs of all pages with sequence numbers written on them so we will know the first page from the last, etc. Show all color breaks and write file names on the proofs.
  2. Inform Faust if you have trapped the documents, or if Faust should trap them.
  3. Create keyline picture boxes with hard copy of cropping or create a low resolution version for Faust to use when replacing high resolution images. Include a picture ID inside keyline.
  4. Do not create printer spreads. Set up pages to flow in continuous sequential order as single page units.
  5. Be consistent in the way you create repeated elements.
  6. Make your page setup size the same as that of the trimmed, printed piece.
  7. Be aware that color on your monitor will look different when printed, so use a color guide (Pantone) when selecting spot colors.
  8. Inform Faust of programs used, their version numbers and file names to be imaged.
  9. Include all instructions in a "read me" file if modeming.

TRAPPING

  1. Be aware that shrinking/spreading changes the apparent weight of an object, especially type.
  2. A white element with overprint selected will not knockout a background even though it looks that way on your computer screen.
  3. Elements that trap must abut.
  4. Use measurement pallet to line up elements.

MEDIA

  1. 31/2" IBM/Mac diskettes.
  2. Iomega Zip 100 and Jazz (1or 2 gig)
  3. CD
  4. You can E-mail your small files (less than 1Mb) to us at Faustinc@ix.netcom.com, however we ask that you call a customer service rep first and tell them what time you will send it, what platform (mac or pc) and what we should be expecting.

Faust can also accept the following for reproduction:

  1. Transparencies for scanning.
  2. Reflective art for scanning and camera work.
  3. Dummies for us to create the artwork.
